As a substitute teacher, developing effective ways to manage your classroom is the most important task. When you are faced with a new set of students every day, it is imperative that you immediately establish the tone and get their attention. I have seen teachers come up with numerous creative ways to engage a class and earn students' trust.
When I walk into a classroom for the first time, I always begin with a brief introduction followed by an explanation of my favorite hobby: Bikram Yoga. I then invite the class to join me for a breathing exercise. This method has engaged my students, and established a certain healthy respect towards my choice of activities outside the classroom. Yoga has become a "trade mark" to my students. Repeat students actually look forward to my classes and expect to participate in Yoga poses and breathing exercises. Of course, an added benefit is getting the kids participate in a mind/body disciplinary activity. Yoga has become an important part of my teaching curriculum. It has served me well in opening the channels of communication with my students, and has been a healthy motivator by combining discipline with fun activity.
